Ask Touch Guy!

November 2011
We are designing for an application where the customer needs to touch more than one touch screen simultaneously. We want to use projected capacitive for its scratch resistance but are not sure how to manage the interference problem when two screens are touched at the same time. Do you have any suggestions on how to solve this problem?

September 2011
When evaluating a touch screen for a hardened handheld product (the system must survive a 3-5 foot drop onto cement, and cleaning with alcohol and water), how does resistive multi-touch compare with projected capacitive, particularly for gloved hand (1-2 layers of latex or nitrile), multi-touch and gesturing GUI’s?

August 2011
I’m curious about flexible touch screens – why are there not more in the market and what are the challenges and limitations associated with them? What design considerations do I need to be aware of when integrating them?

July 2011
My engineers claim gestures on multi-touch resistive do not work nearly as well as they do on projected capacitive (PCT) used in a variety of consumer devices, like the iPhone – why is this? Have there been any recent breakthroughs with resistive multi-touch? I would appreciate any new input on this subject.

June 2011
I’m kind of new to the touch screen world and am trying to figure out why it is so difficult to get large (over 22”) multi-touch resistive and projected capacitive touch screens. Also, what are the big advantages and performance differences between the competing multi-touch technologies?

May 2011
Can you please explain what sputtering and micro-etching are and how are they used in touch screen manufacturing to impact touch performance?

April 2011
I’m working on an open source 17″ tablet for the DIY 3D printing community and am in desperate need of a 17″ – 17.1″ USB multi-touch screen overlay with a 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio. Where can I find such a beast?

March 2011
I’m mounting a projected capacitive touch screen to a 17” monitor and am trying to find out how much of a gap I need to leave between the touch screen and LCD glass. Is the gap dependent upon the type of touch screen used? Also, do you have any suggestions for how to mount it to the LCD or bezel?

February 2011
I’m trying to figure out how multi-touch controllers work and have a few questions.

January 2011
I am prototyping an in-car computing and entertainment system and am hoping you can recommend a touch screen that fulfills my requirements. Can you help?

December 2010
My company is developing a sleek new GPS and we’re looking for the right touch solution. We’ve looked at projected capacitive touch screens, but feel the cost will push our product’s price point up too much. What do you suggest?

November 2010
I stepped on my fancy iPhone 4 and whole screen is completely cracked! I can barely see the images, but somehow it still works! How is this possible?

October 2010
What do you think is going to be the next “big thing” in the future of touch technology? Currently it seems like projected capacitive multi-touch is the way to go – what’s next?

August 2010
I’ve been hearing a lot about multi-touch these days – what’s the difference between resistive multi-touch and projected capacitive multi-touch and why would someone choose one over the other?

July 2010
I have an older factory floor industrial machine that has a 13” curved touch screen built into it and is connected by a Wiretail (round) connector. If I switch from a curved touch screen to a flat panel, will there be compatibility issues? Please help!

June 2010
How is TI's new MulTI-Touch Projected Capacitive Technology able to work with water spray?

May 2010
Is projected capacitive technology reliable when used outdoors in a marine environment where it will be exposed to rain, saltwater spray, bright sunlight, etc? What are the likely points of failure?

March 2010
Do I need to consider integrating multi-touch into the next generation of my touch products?

January 2010
Hey Touch Guy, how should I pick a touch screen company?

December 2009
Do I have to use special software to use my touch screen?

October 2009
Which Touch International touchscreens are able to withstand extreme temperatures and are suitable for the automotive industry?

August 2009
What adhesives do you recommend for bonding the touch screen to the LCD?

July 2009
Hello Touch Guy! My name is Jeffery. I have a new product that I would like to finish the prototype for, but...I cannot find a flexible, yet durable touch film (no glass) I can use.  The size needs to be approximately 12" x 12" (+/- 1 or 2") but I am willing to look at other options. I am talking to the TV show, Shark Tank, and counting on a few other companies to bring this product to market. The problem I am facing is manufacturing's willingness to deal with me. I'm not asking for something for free and am willing to pay for a sample unit, but the supplier must be able to supply 1,000 units at a time.

Do you have any suggestions for companies that can provide a flexible touch film?

May 2009
It was with great excitement that I received my projective capacitive multi-touch kit from Touch International. My guidelines for our vendor were to find a touchscreen with multi-touch support and support for security glass. I’ve seen that there is no driver for this touch screen to support multi-touch. And on the other hand we tried to put a glass layer in front of the touch panel and it didn’t work. Another problem we are facing is that if the touch-panel comes near the lcd-panel the touch coordinates are wrong. What gives?

March 2009
This may sound like a stupid question, but can I hurt a touch screen by touching it?

February 2009
Hey Touch Guy, my cranky-boss said I need to use the most dependable touch screen for our new product…so help me out, which one?
